This entry is part 11 of 17 in the series Strategic Planning

When starting Step Three, many are tempted to dive into the practical side of ideas. At first it is just a brainstorming effort where you let the ideas flow without critique. Don’t worry about “How” or “When” yet (that is step five)

For now you are just reaching for the achievable ideas and dreaming a few big dreams. The list will be very broad and vague for now. It will be refined in step 4 and 5.Futuristic

Examples of what you might write down:

  • Become a leader in the use of Ed Tech tools
  • Improving Reading scores
  • Get Google Apps for Education for all sites/all students
  • Develop an archival system that provides secure access for staff
  • Get a new LMS in place
  • Empower student mobility

Get the ideas out of your head and down on paper. Let others contribute. Keep it rapid fire. Take about 30 minutes to do it. After that time frame you will be stretching for items that are not at the front of your mind.

Set the list aside and revisit it a few times to see if you missed something or worded something wrong. Improve the list a few times and then prep for the next step.

The Product of this Step:

  • A coalescing Vision of what you want to do going forward
  • 5-7 Targets of review and possible action (it can be 13-20 at this point if you like)
  • Others who agree in general to your targets

Who’s Involved:

  • Everyone – get ideas from everywhere.

As the list is developing and you get ideas from all over, remind folks that the list is in flux and not the end product yet. Some things on the list might drop off or never make the final cut.  Make no promises yet. As people now start getting encouraged by your efforts to move things forward, they may think that their idea should be paramount.
